Founded in 1989 on the initiative of Jacques Caen,
the Institute of Vessels and Blood (IVS) is the
leading research and care centre for vascular disease.
Located in Lariboisière Hospital, IVS rubs shoulders
in the same building with an Inserm unit
(fundamental research) and a public assistance
clinical department.
Thanks to the impetus provided by Gérard Tobelem, its director, the institute has begun to refocus research on angiogenesis, in other words the body mechanisms that work together to form blood vessels.
The research programme supported by the Foundation is aimed at understanding how neo-vessels contribute to aggressive tumour development, using a model of transgenic mice that develop liver cancer. The model should help test the viability of molecules designed to slow down liver tumours or make them regress.
